The house is of historic interest, dating back to 1543, when it was built by Squire
Dawtry, a wealthy local man then.Oak beams and roaring log fires in the inglenooks add further to the welcoming atmosphere that Nick and Barbara have created for all who visit

Petworth, a medieval town with winding cobbled streets and charming old houses, is a delightful surprise for the many visitors who flock here.
It is a Mecca for anyone interested in antiques, with no less than
33 antique shops.
Other attractions include the stately home, Petworth House, ancestral seat of the Egremonts but now owned by the National Trust. Lord Egremont was the painter
Turner's patron and many of his pictures are exhibited in the house
along with those of other great masters. The house's delightful Deerpark was designed by Capability Brown |

At the other end of the scale is Petworth Cottage Museum - a tiny house in the centre of town furnished as though still lived in at the beginning of the 20th century. Many other places of historic interest, such as Arundel Castle and Parham House, SingletonAir Museum, Portsmouth and Lord Nelson's flagship 'Victory', are all within easy reach of
Petworth.
Perhaps the greatest bonus of a visit to Petworth is the fact that it lies in a part of West Sussex designated an area of outstanding natural beauty. |
